Beginnings:

After graduation from college in 1984, a very tough job market led Paula Janowicz Berry to North Carolina where she was employed as the Marketing Manager for "The Marketplace at Winston-Salem," a 50 store Mall. To become eligible for additional opportunities within the company, Paula went to school to obtain her Real Estate License. Being licensed allowed her to assist in the leasing process at other shopping centers owned by her employers. Paula spent her weekends and evenings looking for potential tenants suitable for the available space. She made contact with a young couple who owned a couple sub shops and she asked them to consider a space she had available. Their sub shops were Subway stores and they were interested in the new location. Paula was so affected by the couple's enthusiasm and positive attitude about their business that she was compelled to explore the Subway concept. Through her research, Paula learned that the Toledo, OH market was ready for development. Unable to financially take on such a big project, Paula pitched her idea and pledged her 100% dedication to a few potential financial backers. She found a willing financial partner who generously offered her 50% of the company they eventually started. They opened their first store in September 1988. Paula was responsible for 100% of all operations.

By 1990, Paula opened 7 stores with her partner's financial assistance. In 1991, they decided to purchase 4 existing stores from another owner. It was at that time that Rob Gwozdz was hired as General Manager. By the end of 1993, Paula was able to financially handle things on her own so she and her financial partner equally divided the assets of their company and each continued with Subway independently. Paula called her "new" company Goldwing Ventures, Inc. In 1999 Paula relocated to Plain City, OH. It was at that time, that she decided to make Rob an operating partner since her physical presence would be reduced to two days a week.

Paula has been a member of the local Subway advertising board for the past 22 years. For Goldwing Ventures, she handles all new store development, all financial and accounting tasks, and has daily communication with Rob regarding all operational decisions.
